FANUC CNCs Help MJC Engineering Build Hydrogen Equipment on Time

FANUC CNCs, motors and drives helped a domestic machine builder supply equipment critical for Japan’s hydrogen energy strategy.

Challenges

  • Facing long wait times from other OEM parts supplier
  • Needed to shorten machine build times
  • Lack of FANUC control experience
  • Controls, motors and drives had to be reliable and accurate

Results

  • Domestic availability of parts improved lead times

  • Engineering support helped staff transition to new control platform

  • Machine delivered to customer on time

  • FANUC products deliver unbeatable and reliable performance

Story

MJC Engineering manufactures advanced CNC metal spinning equipment for customers throughout the world. The company received an order from a Japanese company to build a metal spinning machine to form aluminum liners for high pressure hydrogen cylinders. This type of machinery is critical for hydrogen storage, which is key to Japan’s decarbonization plan of transitioning to hydrogen as its energy source.

Due to supply chain issues with the company’s parts supplier, MJC was facing long lead times for parts, in some cases up to two years. After MJC contacted FANUC America, the company was able to receive controls, motors and drives in weeks, not years. Plus, with the support of FANUC America’s application engineers, MJC successfully built and delivered a reliable and precise machine on deadline.

Carl Lorentzen President, MJC

To get our custom software to talk to a new controller that is no small task, but I'm actually very impressed with the support that FANUC has given us to make this possible. Because without that, we would have failed.
