Large Parts CNC Machining Using FANUC CNCs

Large parts often present unique challenges for loading and workholding. This is simplified if the CNC can automatically adjust the part program to match the orientation of the part - rather than mechanically having to adjust the orientation of the part to the part program. It is also often impractical for the operator to establish the part orientation using conventional measurement tools. Large parts typically means a large machine, which presents its own challenges in maintaining accuracy over the total working envelope.

To complement machine precision and mechanical adjustments, the FANUC controls provide a comprehensive suite of compensation technologies to optimize machine accuracy. Standard and advanced versions of backlash and pitch error compensation are the typical starting point, with inclination, straightness and thermal growth compensation available for larger or specialized machines.

Large Parts CNC Machining Using FANUC CNCs - Features and Benefits

Coordinate system rotation

FANUC CNCs offer several methods for adjusting the part program to the actual part orientation including, 2D Workpiece Coordinate Rotation, 3D Workpiece Coordinate Rotation and Tilted Working Plane.

In-process measurement

When it has to be right first time it is wise to remove the chances of human error. Automated processes are often faster and more repeatable. FANUC controls provide multiple inputs to in-process measuring devices for tool length, tool breakage detection, 3D part orientation, hole location, plane detection and part machined size. This data can be used with features such as workpiece setting error compensation, tool geometry offsets and tool wear offsets to ensure each and every part is manufactured to specification.

Measurement systems

Data for the compensation features may be collected using the industry’s leading measurement devices including 2D laser measurement systems, 3D laser calibration systems and ballbar analysis systems.

Thermal growth compensation

Compensates for machine and tooling growth or shrinkage due to thermal expansion or contraction and adjusts the machine axes to keep the effective tool length constant.

3D Volumetric compensation

When all mechanical kinematics and their relationships and thermal growth compensations are set, 3D Volumetric Compensation can fine tune any remaining errors over the machines working envelope.
