Story

Pointe Precision, a Wisconsin-based aerospace machine shop known for tackling extreme tolerances, faced a critical challenge: how to consistently produce complex components to within 0.0001 inches of cylindricity—at high volume, with minimal operator involvement, and within a limited footprint. In an industry where every part must perform flawlessly at 30,000 feet, the margin for error simply didn’t exist. While achieving this level of precision on a single part is difficult enough, scaling it into a repeatable, lights-out process pushed beyond conventional manufacturing approaches. Many potential automation integrator partners stepped away once they understood the technical demands and requirements.

United Grinding North America, supported by Matrix, however, stepped in as a collaborative partner that worked closely with Pointe Precision to design and deliver a fully integrated, turnkey solution. Rather than treating grinding, gauging, and automation as separate challenges, the team engineered them into a unified manufacturing cell. Anchored by a STUDER S122 cylindrical grinder, the system incorporated in-process gauging and real-time auto-compensation, enabling the machine to measure and adjust continuously without operator intervention. Just as important, United Grinding worked with Matrix who implemented machine tending capabilities using FANUC’s M-10iD robot to run a 24/7 lights-out operation. All of this work was managed by United Grinding to fit within Pointe Precision’s space constraints.

The collaboration proved to be as critical as the technology itself. Pointe Precision was deeply involved throughout the process, with ideas and feedback shaping the final solution. Extensive upfront testing and feasibility work ensured the process could meet stringent aerospace requirements before it ever reached production. The result was not just a piece of equipment, but a reliable, repeatable manufacturing system built specifically for one of the most demanding applications in precision machining.

The impact was immediate and measurable. The automated cell now produces parts every two to five minutes with zero customer rejects, while freeing operators from constant oversight. What was once a fully manual, labor-intensive process has become a lights-out operation capable of delivering consistent quality at scale. Beyond efficiency gains, the solution has given Pointe Precision the confidence and capacity to take on more complex aerospace work, strengthening its competitive position.

About Pointe Precision

Pointe Precision Inc. was established in June 1995 following the closure of a large manufacturing facility in Stevens Point. Founder and Chairman of the Board, Joe Kinsella, saw an opportunity to start something new, providing an opportunity to keep experienced employees within the community. Pointe Precision began operations with 94 employees in a leased building in Stevens Point, manufacturing high tolerance components for the Aerospace and Industrial markets, eventually expanding into the Medical and Recreational industries.
